Blue Rinse Grey Knights

By Hoard of Hordes

The Blue Rinse Grey Knights were a 1,750pt army that I built and painted for my nephew. I have to say this was one of the most fun projects I've done. The grey knight models have sumptuous levels of detail but they were also really easy to paint. The emblems and slogans on their armour are deeply recessed and can be picked out with simple washes, whilst masking tape allowed the creation of simple heraldry without going free hand.

I had limited time to build and paint so the watchword for this paint scheme was simplicity. Models were base coated in army painter gun metal. This was my first experience of using the army painter sprays and I was really impressed. Holding the spray on too long could fill in detail and I'm not sure I'd use the product on finely detailed miniatures, but on models like these with deep, sharply differentiated features it was great.

Everything else was done with citadel paints:

  • Lettering on the armour was dry brushed balthasar gold, washed with nuln oil, and then given a very fine dry brush of silver
  • Skulls were ushabti bone with a wash of sepia and a light dry brush of pallid wych flesh
  • Heraldry was a combination of base white and mephiston red with masking tape being used to quickly create sharp edges on the very simple designs
  • Power weapons were necron abyss dry brushed from edges inwards with enchanted blue and then white
  • Weapon casings were abbadon black with some highlights of mechanicum grey, the only highlights used on the whole models
  • Seals and papers were screaming skull, with writing written on with a 01 pilot drawing pen and then washed with sepia
  • Cartridges and flamer parts were done is dwarf bronze with a wash of nuln oil
  • Armour was given a double wash of drakenhof nightshade and a quick drybrush of silver on any edges that would catch the light.
  • Daemon heads were based in white and then repeatedly washed with green/brown/green for nurgle or red/purple/red for khorne
  • Bases were textured with stirling mud, and then dry brushed with bestial brown, snakebite leather and then screaming skull.
The fact that the army painter base coat did most of the work and the virtual absence of highlighting meant that these models just flew off the production line.
